Indian

Indian food was started by the Indus Valley Civilization, where they would create and trade strong spices with other colonies. Europeans created colonies in India during the 16th century. They brought the cuisine back with them to Europe. From there, Indian food started to evolve. A few popular dishes are curry, tikka madras/masala and bhuna.

Chicken Tikka

Chicken Tikka is one of the most popular Indian dishes in the world. It is a combination of pieces of chicken marinated in yogurt with rice and typical Indian spices such as cumin and coriander.

The dish is thought to have originated in the UK as Bangladeshi chefs created milder versions of their traditional dishes. It is now one of the most popular takeout dishes in the world and a staple in Indian restaurants everywhere.

The Oven

The Oven is one of the most popular Indian restaurants in Lincoln. Their first location opened in the Lincoln Haymarket in 1988. There are now three locations across Lincoln. Their dedicated team of chefs make bread and marinate several different types of meat each day to be cooked in their tandoor. A tandoor is an urn-shaped clay oven commonly used in Indian cooking. Their menu and atmosphere make it easy for anyone in Lincoln to experience a bit of Indian culture for themselves.

Suji's Indian Grocery

Located along O Street, Suji’s Indian Grocery carries a huge variety of authentic Indian ingredients, snacks and other products. One look at the store's spice rack reveals an extensive collection of everything needed to create a deeply seasoned and authentic meal. Even though the store is small, it’s hard to not get lost exploring all it has to offer.

The store is also a hub for Indian culture. Their website advertises a Hindu priest for religious events. On our visit to Suji’s, we met the owner who made us feel welcome in his store. Upon learning we are students, he gave us our produce for free and added a small discount to our bill.
